Nasal septal schwannoma is a rare tumor. It causes complaints such as nasal congestion, nosebleeds, and headaches. There are many diseases such as nasal polyps, antrochoanal polyp, chronic rhinosinusitis, concha bullosa, inverted papilloma, and retention cyst with schwannoma diagnosis. The diagnosis is made histopathologically, and the treatment is surgery. In this case report, we presented a male patient with septal schwannoma who had nasal obstruction for a year and reviewed the last 20 years of...
Introduction. Although rare, cholesteatoma can develop as a late complication of cochlear implantation. The electrode array may then be exposed in the external auditory canal surrounded by cholesteatoma debris. Case Report. The cochlear implant of a child was inadvertently explanted by a clinician during a routine aural toilet procedure. The child had previously reported recurrent ear infections, pain, and unexplained implant function degradation. Reimplantation was carried out 2 days later with...

Abstract Purpose A fluorescence-based technique for the detection of parathyroid glands (PGs) intraoperatively was previously reported. The technique was based on the phenomenon in which PGs emit autofluorescence when exposed to near-infrared light and we undertook an evaluation to consider the pathological accuracy of the method. Methods The...
Abstract Purpose Enhanced management of the pre-term patient has resulted in improved survival rates in increasingly premature patients. Although prematurity predisposes to congenital airway pathology, there is also increased risk of endotracheal intubation, and therefore acquired subglottic pathology. We sought to evaluate airway pathology in children outside the neonatal period with a history of prematurity to explore the relationship...
Abstract Background To repair a blow-out fracture, the endonasal approach is indicated when the center of the fracture occurs in the orbital floor medial to the infraorbital nerve, or when the orbital tissue is herniated inwards; additionally, the combined endonasal and transmaxillary approach is indicated for fractures of the anterior and lateral parts of the orbital floor. ...

Abstract The molecular nature of the hair cycle clock (HCC), i.e. the intrinsic oscillator system that drives hair follicle (HF) cycling, remains incompletely understood; therefore, all relevant key players need to be identified. Here, we present evidence that implicates myelin protein zero‐ like 3 (MPZL3), a multifunctional nuclear‐encoded mitochondrial protein known to be involved in epidermal differentiation, in HCC regulation. By analysing global Mpzl3 knockout (‐/‐) mice, we show that in the...
Abstract The pathogenesis of cutaneous T‐cell lymphomas is not clear. In recent years the genetic changes in CTCL were explored. The detected mutations showed a great deal of heterogeneity between individual patients. The studies documented various copy number variations (CNV) and single nucleotide variations (SNV) in multiple genes involved in multiple signaling pathways. Recurrently mutated signaling pathways include JAK‐STAT, MAPK, T cell receptor, TNF receptor and NFκB signaling. In the period...
Abstract The anatomy of the hair follicle and the dynamics of its barrier provide a special space for interactions between macromolecules and the underlying tissue. Translocation across the hair follicle epithelium and immune recognition have been confirmed for proteins, nucleic acids, engineered particles, virus particles and others. Tissue responses can be modulated by pro‐inflammatory stimuli as demonstrated in penetration and transcutaneous immunization studies. Even under physiological conditions,...

When endolaryngeal approaches are inadequate and when there is significant injury to the larynx, transcervical approaches are necessary. This is most often necessary for Schaefer-Fuhrman Class II -IV. Assessment and treatment always begin with evaluation and management of the airway followed by operative endoscopy to determine the extent of injury and guide surgical repair. Treatment includes open reduction and fixation of cartilaginous fractures but when there is significant endolaryngeal injury,...

Benjamin Franklin said “by failing to prepare you are preparing to fail“. There is no substitute for knowledge about trauma, however, we may not always have all the tools we need to succeed, especially in trauma situations because we do not have time to get ready. Trauma is not a scheduled event and comprehensive knowledge of trauma is not readily available, especially in civilian centers. During my training in a major city hospital and a Veterans Administration hospital, we frequently were without...

The role of imaging, particularly computed tomography (CT) and CT angiography (CTA) can significantly enhance the evaluation of patients with craniofacial trauma, assisting with appropriate management and surgical planning. Radiologic studies additionally provide information about soft tissue and vascular trauma which cannot always be excluded by physical...
Laryngotracheal and pharyngoesophageal injuries are a relatively rare component of head and neck trauma; however, if not managed correctly, the consequences of these injuries can be life threatening. The early management of these injuries involves bedside endoscopic evaluation, often followed by formal endoscopy in the operating room. While many of these patients may require open surgical procedures, some of these injuries, and especially the long-term complications they cause, can be managed endoscopically.
