Abstract Objectives The aim of this randomized, controlled, parallel‐arm study was to evaluate the (1) radiographic bone dimensional changes, (2) postoperative discomfort, and (3) early soft tissue wound healing outcomes, following extraction of maxillary anterior teeth (central and lateral incisors) and treatment with alveolar ridge preservation (ARP) with and without the adjunctive use of enamel matrix derivative (EMD). Methods Thirty extraction sockets were randomly assigned to two groups:...

In Graves’ orbitopathy, surgical decompression is often needed for functional and aesthetic reasons. This meta-analysis was performed to assess the efficacy and safety of fat removal orbital decompression (FROD) alone to treat exophthalmos in Graves’ orbitopathy. A systematic search was conducted in PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library for studies published before August 2018. Random-effects meta-analyses were applied; weighted means and weighted proportions with corresponding 95%...

Damage to the endotracheal tube in orthognathic surgery is not uncommon. Inadvertent tearing of the tube by a reciprocating saw has been experienced in many centres.1–3 This kind of damage is usually immediately obvious, as bubbling and problems with ventilation mean that the tube must be replaced.3 Some of these cases may also present with difficulties in extubation.4,5 Here we present a patient who had a double-jaw operation in which the nasotracheal tube was found to be stuck during awakening...
Several papers - including both research articles and letters to the editor – have been published recently, on the topic of coronectomy, which is aimed at protecting the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) during the removal of teeth.1 It is also well-known that the vast majority of residual roots show a definite migration pattern (on average up to ∼3.5mm, mostly within the first 24months).2 After 1year, 53.2% to 62.9% of the cases that started out with superimposition ended up showing none.3 In contrast,...
Good visibility is a challenge when fixing large orbital fractures. In particular, placing large implants in a controlled manner without using wide approaches may require compromises. Three different incisions - subciliary, subtarsal, and transconjunctival - have traditionally been used for exploration of the orbital floor,1 but they can cause different complications, they have their own impairment profiles, and some are more demanding and time consuming than others.1,2
It was with great interest that we read the article by Dungarwalla et al1 on their experience with the WhatsApp instant messaging service. We also use this “app” to maintain communication between dental core trainees, specialty registrars and consultants. Whilst we find it to be a useful and easy way of communicating and sharing information, we would also like to highlight some of the dangers associated with its use.

In earlier studies involving children with mixed dentition, masticatory exercises were shown to improve masticatory function and modify dental arch growth. Grinding type of mastication with a wide path reportedly increases...

Abstract We thank Professor Warnakulasuriya for his letter (Warnakulasuriya, 2019) and comments in relation to our systematic review of prospective studies assessing the prognostic biomarkers of oral leukoplakia (Villa et al., 2019). We agree that identifying prognostic biomarkers for oral leukoplakia is an important topic for oral medicine specialists. Hence our commitment to addressing such a diverse and scientifically challenging area as a component of World Workshop of Oral Medicine VII. This...

Abstract Introduction Transoral partial glossectomy procedures for small squamous cell carcinomas of the anterior tongue often leave significant defects which are challenging to reconstruct. Post‐operative scarring leads to adhesions, reduced tongue mobility and limitations of function. We present a series of cases where a decalcified collagen scaffold was successfully used in this challenging reconstructive setting. Methods After standard oncological diagnostic and workup, five patients...
