Mother–Infant Bonding and Emotional Availability at 12-Months of Age: The Role of Early Postnatal Bonding, Maternal Substance Use and Mental Health
Abstract Introduction The quality of the mother–child relationship in the first year of life has far reaching implications across the life course (Bornstein in Annu Rev Psychol 65:121–158, 2014). Yet little is known about predictors of maternal bonding and emotional availability in early infancy. In this study we examined the extent to which postnatal bonding, maternal mental health, and substance use at 8-weeks postpartum predicted mother–infant...

Esophagogastric junction outflow obstruction on manometry: Outcomes and lack of benefit from CT and EUS
CT and EUS of the GEJ were unhelpful at determining the cause of EGJOO, as they only revealed non‐specific findings or findings that could be seen readily with EGD or BE. Our study may support the reconsideration of the current suggestion that CT and EUS be ordered for all EGJOO. Abstract Background Esophagogastric junction outflow obstruction (EGJOO) is a manometric diagnosis based on the Chicago Classification defined by inadequate relaxation of the gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) with swallowing,...

Luminal 5‐HT4 receptors—A successful target for prokinetic actions
Abstract The prokinetic effects of 5‐HT4 receptor (5‐HT4R) agonists have been utilized clinically for almost three decades to relieve symptoms of constipation. Surprisingly, the mechanism(s) of action of these compounds is still being debated. Recent studies highlight luminal 5‐HT4Rs as an alternative and effective target for these prokinetic agents. These include the study by Shokrollahi et al (2019, Neurogastroenterol Motil, e13598) published in the current issue of Neurogastroenterology and Motility,...

Dual Process Theories in Behavioral Economics and Neuroeconomics: a Critical Review
Abstract Despite their popularity, dual process accounts of human reasoning and decision-making have come under intense scrutiny in recent years. Cognitive scientists and philosophers alike have come to question the theoretical foundations of the ‘standard view’ of dual process theory and have challenged the validity and relevance of evidence in support of it. Moreover, attempts to modify and refine dual process theory in light of these challenges have generated additional concerns...

Investigation into Deep Breathing through Measurement of Ventilatory Parameters and Observation of Breathing Patterns
Here, we present a protocol to assess two deep breathing patterns of natural and diaphragmatic breathing for their effectiveness and ease of execution. Fifteen participants were selected, utilizing an electrocardiograph and expired gas analyzer for measurement of the ventilatory parameters, together with visual assessment by video capture of thoracoabdominal movement.

Comparison of the prognostic value of platelet-based prognostic models in patients with malignant hepatic tumors after TACE therapy
Abstract Purpose: To investigate the prognostic value of 17 platelet-based prognostic scores in patients with malignant hepatic tumors after TACE therapy. Methods: In total, 92 patients were divided into death group and survival group according to long-term follow-up results. The AUC was calculated to determine the optimal cut-off values for predicting prognosis. To determine better prognostic models, platelet-based models were analyzed separately after being showed as binary according to cut-off...

New training model using chickens intestine for pediatric intestinal anastomosis
Abstract Purpose: To develop a new low-cost, easy-to-make and available training model using chickens’ intestine for infant intestinal anastomosis. Methods: Segments of chicken intestine were used to create an intestinal anastomosis simulator. We tried to perform an end-to-end, end-to-side and side-to-side anastomosis. Handsewn sutured anastomosis were performed in single layered with interrupted prolene 5-0 suture. The parameters analyzed were cost, intestine's diameter and length, anastomosis...

Splenic ischemic preconditioning attenuates oxidative stress induced by hepatic ischemia-reperfusion in rats
Abstract Purpose: To evaluate the effects of splenic ischemic preconditioning (sIPC) on oxidative stress induced by hepatic ischemia-reperfusion in rats. Methods: Fifteen male Wistar rats were equally divided into 3 groups: SHAM, IRI and sIPC. Animals from IRI group were subjected to 45 minutes of partial liver ischemia (70%). In the sIPC group, splenic artery was clamped in 2 cycles of 5 min of ischemia and 5 min of reperfusion (20 min total) prior to hepatic ischemia. SHAM group underwent the...

Botulinum toxin as a treatment for short bowel syndrome in rats
Abstract Purpose: The denervation of the intestine with benzalkonium chloride (BAC) reduces mortality and improves weight gain in rats with short bowel syndrome (SBS). Nevertheless, translating these promising findings from bench to bedside is not feasible because BAC promotes peritonitis and irreversible denervation which may be followed by an uncontrolled dilatation of the viscera. The use of botulinum toxin (BT) instead of BAC to achieve the denervation of the remaining small intestine in SBS...
