Genetic Modification of Cyanobacteria by Conjugation Using the CyanoGate Modular Cloning Toolkit
Here, we present a protocol describing how to i) assemble a self-replicating vector using the CyanoGate modular cloning toolkit, ii) introduce the vector into a cyanobacterial host by conjugation, and iii) characterize transgenic cyanobacteria strains using a plate reader or flow cytometry.

High-Contrast and Fast Photorheological Switching of a Twist-Bend Nematic Liquid Crystal
This protocol demonstrates the preparation of a photorheological material that exhibits a solid phase, various liquid crystalline phases, and an isotropic liquid phase by increasing temperature. Presented here are methods for measuring the structure-viscoelasticity relationship of the material.

Isolation and Characterization of Extracellular Vesicles Produced by Iron-limited Mycobacteria
Mycobacterium tuberculosis shows increased production and release of extracellular vesicles in response to low iron conditions. This work details a protocol for generating low iron conditions and methods for the purification and characterization of mycobacterial extracellular vesicles released in response to iron deficiency.

Pneumococcus Infection of Primary Human Endothelial Cells in Constant Flow
This study describes the microscopic monitoring of pneumococcus adherence to von Willebrand factor strings produced on the surface of differentiated human primary endothelial cells under shear stress in defined flow conditions. This protocol can be extended to detailed visualization of specific cell structures and quantification of bacteria by applying differential immunostaining procedures.

Prospecting Microbial Strains for Bioremediation and Probiotics Development for Metaorganism Research and Preservation
Pollution affects all biomes. Marine environments have been particularly impacted, especially coral reefs, one of the most sensitive ecosystems on Earth. Bioremediation is the capacity of organisms to degrade contaminants. Here, we describe methodologies to isolate and test microbes presenting bioremediation ability and potential probiotic characteristics for corals.

Customizing a Cryolite Glass Prosthetic Eye
This manuscript shows each step of customizing a cryolite glass prosthetic eye including some major advantages of the use of cryolite glass for manufacturing an eye prosthesis compared to poly(methyl methacrylate). In addition, this manuscript gives ophthalmologists better insight into the ocularistic care that could improve interprofessional collaboration.

A potential role of lymphangiogenesis for peripheral nerve injury and regeneration
Publication date: Available online 31 October 2019Source: Medical HypothesesAuthor(s): Florian S. Frueh, Epameinondas Gousopoulos, Dominic M. Power, Emmanuel Ampofo, Pietro Giovanoli, Maurizio Calcagni, Matthias W. LaschkeAbstractTraumatic peripheral nerve injuries are common and socioeconomically highly relevant. Despite significant microsurgical advances, the results of surgical reconstruction are still far from optimal and the rate of life-long complications, such as impaired motor and sensory...

Surgical delay of anterior chest wall Prior to open coronary arterial bypass grafting surgery may decrease postoperative sternal complications
Publication date: Available online 30 October 2019Source: Medical HypothesesAuthor(s): Paul L Shay, Hope Xu, Hani Sbitany, Peter W HendersonAbstractOpen coronary arterial bypass grafting (CABG) procedures are inherently risky in regards to the healing capacity of the subsequent sternal wound. Patients often have underlying risk factors for poor healing and the procedure itself often reduces vascularity to the anterior chest with internal mammary artery (IMA) dissection. Currently unrelated is the...

Iron deficiency anemia revisited
Abstract Iron deficiency anemia is a global health concern affecting children, women and the elderly, while also being a common comorbidity in multiple medical conditions. The etiology is variable and attributed to several risk factors decreasing iron intake and absorption or increasing demand and loss; with multiple etiologies often coexisting in an individual patient. Although presenting symptoms may be nonspecific, there is emerging evidence on the detrimental effects of iron deficiency...
