Storiform collagenoma (sclerotic fibroma) of the oral mucosa
Storiform collagenoma (also called sclerotic fibroma) is uncommon, occurs as a cutaneous fibrous neoplasm, and is particularly rare in mucosal tissue in the head and neck. We describe an unexpected diagnosis in the oral cavity. Histopathological examination showed a proliferation of fibrous tissue, which was well circumscribed but unencapsulated, with thick laminated bundles of eosinophilic collagen that exhibited a storiform or “whorled” pattern. First described by Weary et al in 1972, storiform...

Unexpected diagnosis of an intramuscular myxoma arising from the masseter muscle
Intramuscular myxomas are myxoid neoplasms that mainly affect the muscles of the thigh, upper arm, and gluteus. In the head and neck region they are rare, and we know of only two reported cases in the masseter muscle. We think that this is the third. A 60-year-old woman presented with a painless nodule on the right side of her face. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a well-defined mass restricted to the muscle, with no infiltration into adjacent structures. Microscopic analysis confirmed the gross...

Interpretation of data: does amoxicillin reduce the risk of infection in patients after third molar extraction?
Our research team read with great interest the work published by Menon et al.1, “Does the use of amoxicillin/amoxicillin–clavulanic acid in third molar surgery reduce the risk of postoperative infection? A systematic review with meta-analysis”. Their study covers an important clinical and research topic. The authors stated that “In conclusion, amoxicillin–clavulanic acid and amoxicillin may significantly reduce the risk of infection after third molar extraction” and “The present review indicates...

Severe bleeding from a duodenal ulcer after orthognathic surgery: a case report
Chronic non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug use is strongly associated with peptic ulcer disease, and corticosteroid use has also been cited as a risk factor. Both are frequently prescribed for short courses after orthognathic surgery to minimize edema. It appears that no cases of severe bleeding from a duodenal ulcer have been reported during the postoperative period after orthognathic surgery. This case describes a patient who experienced this severe bleeding despite having no risk factors.

Evaluation of reproducibility of the chemical solubility of dental ceramics using ISO 6872:2015
Publication date: Available online 21 November 2019Source: The Journal of Prosthetic DentistryAuthor(s): Rayan A. Hawsawi, Cheryl A. Miller, Robert D. Moorehead, Christopher W. StokesAbstractStatement of problemThe current chemical solubility method in the International Standards Organization (ISO) 6872 (2015) specifies only the total surface area of specimens for testing (≥30 cm2) but does not describe the morphology or geometry. This could impact the reproducibility of the test outcomes.PurposeThe...

Surface parameters of as-built additive manufactured metal for intraosseous dental implants
Publication date: Available online 21 November 2019Source: The Journal of Prosthetic DentistryAuthor(s): Lara Caroline Pereira Dos Santos, Fernando Costa Malheiros, Alexandre Zuquete GuaratoAbstractStatement of problemTo improve osseointegration, current machined implants are submitted to different surface treatments such as airborne-particle abrasion and acid etching. Although additive manufacturing has allowed the fabrication of implants with custom design, porosity, and roughness, whether good...

Double-milled CAD-CAM composite resin restorations: A proof-of-concept approach to producing histoanatomic bilaminar restorations
Publication date: Available online 21 November 2019Source: The Journal of Prosthetic DentistryAuthor(s): Luís Henrique Schlichting, Pascal MagneAbstractBilaminar semi-indirect composite resin computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) restorations may represent a noninvasive and straightforward alternative to direct composite resin or indirect porcelain veneers. They involve partial reduction (incisoproximal cutback) of a CAD-CAM composite resin restoration, creating a histoanatomic...
