And yet, according to a 2017 article in the journal Palliative Care, many people living with a chronic life-threatening illness either do not receive any palliative care, or receive services only in the last phase of their illness. The National Consensus Project Clinical Practice Guidelines for...

Nonimmune hydrops fetalis (NIHF) historically has been considered a lethal fetal condition. Understanding NIHF to be a symptom or an end-stage status of a variety of fetal conditions, along with improved fetal diagnostics and interventions, has changed the landscape for at least some fetuses. Understanding the pathophysiologic mechanisms has led to the development of diagnostic algorithms, improved understanding of cause, and therefore fetal or neonatal treatments. Multidisciplinary counseling and...
This cluster-randomized clinical trial examines the effect of implementing the Palliative Care for Older People Steps to Success Program in 78 nursing homes in 7 countries with residents and staff outcomes at resident end of life. (Source: JAMA Internal Medicine)
When asked about their preferred location of death, most people say they would like to die at home. Few people say they would like to die in the hospital. Nobody ever says they want to die in a nursing home (NH). But the reality is that many people will live out their final days and take their last breaths in the NH setting. In 2009, more than 1 in 4 decedents in the United States died in an NH. This number is only expected to grow with population aging. (Source: JAMA Internal Medicine)
CONCLUSIONS: In this sample of US primary care physicians, the types of patients seen, practice location, and physician compensation influenced whether physicians routinely discuss ACP with patients who are older and sicker. Practices demonstrating more features of APCP/PCMH models of primary care are also associated with ACP discussions. PMID: 31704752 [PubMed - in process] (Source: American Family Physician)
