Comparison of wall removal type vs. wall retaining type of decompression for treating large mandibular odontogenic cysts
Abstract Objective To evaluate the differences between two types of decompression for treating large mandibular odontogenic cysts. Materials and Methods This retrospective, cohort study included patients who were diagnosed for large mandibular odontogenic cysts from January 2015 to April 2018, and underwent two different types of decompression based on removal or retention of the cyst wall. The primary outcome was the percentage of the residual cyst area within 1 year after surgery. We...

Histologic analysis following grafting of damaged extraction sockets using deproteinized bovine or porcine bone mineral: A randomized clinical trial
Abstract Objectives This study histologically analysed biopsy samples obtained from sites of damaged extraction socket grafting using deproteinized bovine bone mineral (DBBM) or deproteinized porcine bone mineral (DPBM) with coverage by a collagen membrane. Material and methods One hundred patients participated in this randomized controlled clinical trial of extraction socket grafts performed in cases of periodontally compromised teeth. All participants were blinded to their group allocations,...

Is a two-month healing period long enough to achieve osseointegration? A prospective clinical cohort study
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of loading at 2 months after the surgical placement of implants. A tapered implant was used. Implant stability was determined using resonance frequency analysis at implant insertion (T0; primary stability), after 2 months (T1), and at the 6-month follow-up (T2). Descriptive statistics and the t-test were used. Significance was at P ≤ 0.05. A total of 268 implants were inserted in 142 patients. No patient dropped out and no implant had failed...

Perioperative effects of leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin in third molar surgery
I read with great interest the study by Ritto et al.1 on the efficacy of leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) for bone healing after the surgical removal of impacted third molars. I thank and congratulate the authors who pointed out in their concise and well-detailed report the many issues with this adjuvant aimed at accelerating the healing process. As the topic analysed in their study is of importance, I would like to add some comments about certain missing points in their detailed analysis.

Patient, radiological, and operative factors associated with surgical difficulty in the extraction of third molars: a systematic review
The aim of this systematic review was to determine the patient, radiological, and operative variables associated with surgical difficulty in the extraction of third molars, according to a visual analogue scale completed by the surgeon, operative time, or surgical technique. Searches of the PubMed (MEDLINE), Scopus, and Cochrane Library databases were conducted by two independent reviewers. Randomized and non-randomized clinical trials and prospective cohort studies evaluating surgical difficulty...

Percutaneous cryoablation of benign bony tumours of the mandible
Treatment of bony tumours of the oral and maxillofacial area usually involve resection. However, access to certain areas may be difficult because of the size or site of the tumour. A poor view of the lesion during operation is another limiting factor, which can lead to incomplete resection in difficult cases. Percutaneous cryoablation is a common procedure for treating benign and malignant bony lesions outside the oral and maxillofacial area, but has to our knowledge never been used as a stand-alone...

Partial duplication of the jaw: case reports and review of relevant publications
Craniofacial duplication is a rare congenital malformation with a wide phenotypic range. The signs and symptoms range from partial craniofacial duplication to bicephalus. We describe two cases of partial duplication of jaw: a girl with a duplication of the maxilla, and a boy with duplication of the mandible. We review the relevant publications and discuss the pathogenesis.
