CONCLUSION: FSS in stage I is a safe procedure and life-birth-rates after FSS are high. More advanced FIGO stages have to be discussed individually and relapse rates have to be weighed against FSS. A central review of pathology, as we performed routinely, is mandatory and may have contributed to our low rate of invasive relapses. Abstract Background While Campylobacter jejuni represents the most common cause of bacterial gastroenteritis, Yersinia pseudotuberculosis infections are very rarely diagnosed in adults. Case We report on a previously healthy patient who presented several times at our hospital with fever, Guillain-Barré syndrome, recurrent abdominal symptoms and distinct...
Abstract Treatment of congenital cytomegalovirus infection is mandatory in cases with severe systemic and/or neurological involvement. However, some patients are paucisymptomatic, with very subtle systemic manifestations and/or minimal brain alterations. Current international guidelines do not clearly state whether these children should be treated, and this decision is not straightforward for clinicians. Of a small series of six infants with congenital cytomegalovirus infection...

Abstract Introduction Despite widespread access to antiretroviral therapy (ART), the burden of advanced HIV disease in South Africa is high. This translates into an increased risk of AIDS‐related opportunistic infections, including invasive mycoses. Methods Using a limited number of non‐culture‐based diagnostic assays, we aimed to determine the prevalence of invasive mycoses and tuberculosis among hospitalised adults with very advanced HIV (CD4 counts <100 cells/µl) at a large...
Abstract Introduction The prevalence of azole resistance in C. parapsilosis is very low in most parts of the world. However, South Africa has reported an exceptionally high prevalence of azole resistance in C. parapsilosis strains isolated from candidaemia cases. We aimed to determine the possible molecular mechanisms of fluconazole resistance in C. parapsilosis isolates obtained through surveillance at a large neonatal unit at a South African academic hospital. Methods We sequenced...
