Comparison and analysis characteristics of flax, perilla and basil seed oils cultivated in Iran
Abstract The oil yield, fatty acid (FA) composition, physicochemical, quality characteristics and thermal properties were studied in flax, perilla, and basil seed oils cultivated in Iran. Also the similarities and differences among these seed oils were investigated using principal component analysis (PCA). The results indicated that perilla seed oil contained the highest lipid content followed by flax and basil seed oils. The n-6/n-3 FA ratios of these oils had a range of 0.190–0.320,...

Potato snacks added with active components: effects of the vacuum impregnation and drying processes
Abstract Potato snacks can be used as an ideal strategy for nutrient delivery, since they are one of the most widely consumed products in the world. Due to fried snacks are known to be a significant source of fat intake, consumption is changing towards healthier alternatives. The aim of this research is to evaluate the effect of vacuum impregnation and three dehydration techniques: heated air drying, freeze drying, and microwave vacuum drying of the potato snack that has been...

Rice in vitro digestion: application of INFOGEST harmonized protocol for glycemic index determination and starch morphological study
Abstract Starch is the main sugar source present in staple foods. Understanding starch hydrolysis during digestion and the resulting glucose release can be important to strategically modulate starch digestion and glucose absorption. In vitro digestion methodologies are fundamental to evaluate starch hydrolysis length and rate, but the lack of uniformity between protocols prevent the comparison of results. In this context, three different Carolino rice varieties (i.e., Carolino...

Mass modeling of Belleric Myrobalan and its physical characterization in relation to post-harvest processing and machine designing
Abstract The present research was inducted to assess the physical properties of Terminalia bellerica fruit which is commonly known as belleric myrobalan. The research includes dimensional properties, gravimetric properties, and frictional properties of the T. bellerica. These properties form an important base for the designing of machine or equipment; those are used in the post-harvest operations. The reported average value for the dimensions of the fruit were 26.80 mm, 20.85 mm,...

A comprehensive analysis of 13 C isotope ratios data of authentic honey types produced in China using the EA-IRMS and LC-IRMS
Abstract In the current study, we have comprehensively analyzed different kinds of pure honey which was produced in various areas in China according to δ13C-EA -IRMS (AOAC method 998.12) and δ13C-LC-IRMS (proposed by the Intertek laboratory in Europe) methods. As for the δ13C-EA -IRMS method, the study was confirmed that the C4 sugar of all authentic honey samples was qualified. Further inter-laboratory comparison experiments using the δ13C-LC-IRMS method found that all authentic...

Characterizing the effect of packaging material and storage temperature on the flavor profiles and quality of soy sauce
Abstract The effect of packaging material and storage temperature on two types of soy sauce was investigated. Ethanol content decreased significantly in all tested samples after storage (P < 0.05). While the changes of physicochemical properties and CIELAB color space indexes varied with soy sauce types, packaging materials and storage temperatures. The changes of volatile profiles after storage indicated that storage temperature was a key factor resulting in flavor scalping....

Differences in physicochemical properties of commercial rice from urban markets in West Africa
Abstract Rice consumers in West Africa (WA) have an acquired preference for imported rice. Enhancing consumption of local rice requires matching the grain quality attributes of the imported benchmarks in addition to increasing productivity of local rice cultivars. Thus, there is a need to develop screening tools that will aid breeding programs select for high-yielding and stress-tolerant cultivars whose grain quality are at par with imported rice. Hence, this study evaluated...

Human health risk assessment due to metals in cow’s milk from Singhbhum copper and iron mining areas, India
Abstract The concentration of Al, As, Ba, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Se and Zn were determined in the milk collected from the locally rearing cows from the vicinity of copper mining areas of East Singhbhum and iron mining areas of West Singhbhum using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry for a risk assessment and source apportionment study. Principal component analysis suggested both natural and anthropogenic activities as causative sources of metals in the milk. The...

Comparison of different classification algorithms to identify geographic origins of olive oils
Abstract Research on investigation and determination of geographic origins of olive oils is increased by consumers’ demand to authenticated olive oils. Classification algorithms which are machine learning methods can be employed for the authentication of olive oils. In this study, different classification algorithms were evaluated to reveal the most accurate one for authentication of Turkish olive oils. BayesNet, Naive Bayes, Multilayer Perception, IBK, Kstar, SMO, Random Forest,...

Evaluation of quality parameters and shelf life of fresh cheese packed under modified atmosphere
Abstract Fresh (acid coagulated) cheeses belong to a group of soft unripen cheeses which are very popular among consumers. However, owing to the specific composition and properties, these cheeses have a limited shelf life. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) onto fresh cheese and to compare it with the commonly used packaging under atmospheric air and vacuum. The produced fresh cheese was packed under normal atmosphere (air),...

Different CALR mutation subtypes in essential thrombocythemia and primary myelofibrosis patients without JAK2 mutation
Summary Background Discovery of calreticulin (CALR) mutations are considered essential in understanding the molecular basis of myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs). These mutations have been demonstrated to be the second driver mutation in MPNs especially essential thrombocythemia (ET) and primary myelofibrosis (PMF). The diagnostic and prognostic significance of these mutations, in addition to the geographical and ethnic heterogeneity,...

Polysome-associated lncRNAs during cardiomyogenesis of hESCs
Abstract Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been found to be involved in many biological processes, including the regulation of cell differentiation, but a complete characterization of lncRNA is still lacking. Additionally, there is evidence that lncRNAs interact with ribosomes, raising questions about their functions in cells. Here, we used a developmentally staged protocol to induce cardiogenic commitment of hESCs and then investigated the differential association of lncRNAs...
