When primary repair is not enough: a comparison of synthetic patch and muscle flap closure in congenital diaphragmatic hernia?
Abstract Purpose Primary closure is often inadequate for large congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) and necessitates repair by prosthetic patch or autologous muscle flap. Our aim was to evaluate outcomes of open patch versus flap repair, specifically diaphragmatic reherniation. Methods A retrospective review (IRB #2017-6361) was performed on all CDH...

Overexpression of tissue factor pathway inhibitor 2 attenuates trophoblast proliferation and invasion in preeclampsia
Abstract Pre-eclampsia (PE) is a disorder of pregnancy characterized by proteinuria and high blood pressure, affecting 2–8% of pregnancies worldwide. Previous studies have shown that PE is closely associated with trophoblast cell dysfunction. Here, we investigated the role of tissue factor pathway inhibitor-2 (TFPI-2) in regulating the biological processes of trophoblast cells. The TFPI-2 levels in plasma samples and placental tissues were tested by ELISA, immunohistochemistry,...

MiR-1256 inhibits cell proliferation and cell cycle progression in papillary thyroid cancer by targeting 5-hydroxy tryptamine receptor 3A
Abstract Aberrant expression of miR-1256 has been reported to be closely associated with the development and progression of tumors, including colon cancer and lung cancer. However, study of its expression pattern and functional role in papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is rare. Using quantitative real time PCR analysis, we found miR-1256 was significantly down-regulated in PTC tissues and cell lines. The correlation of miR-1256 expression with clinicopathological features was statistically...

In this study we thoroughly investigated the impact of different temperatures (37–42 °C), and the sequence of and time interval (0 up to 4 h) between ionizing radiation and hyperthermia on HPV16+: SiHa, Caski; HPV18+: HeLa, C4I; and HPV−: C33A, HT3 cervical cancer cell lines. Our results demonstrate that a short time interval between treatments caused more unrepaired DNA damages and more cell kill, especially at higher temperatures. Identifying and treating candidates for checkpoint inhibitor therapies in multiple myeloma and lymphoma.
Authors: Hradska K, Kascak M, Hajek R, Jelinek T Abstract Introduction: One of the hallmarks of cancerogenesis is the ability of tumor cells to evade the immune system. They can achieve it by abusing inhibitory immune checkpoint pathways, which, under normal circumstances, maintain peripheral tolerance during infection. Immune checkpoint inhibitors, especially anti-PD-1/PD-L1 monoclonal antibodies, currently represent a widely discussed treatment option not only in solid oncology, but in...
