Decoding task engagement from distributed network electrophysiology in humans.
Decoding task engagement from distributed network electrophysiology in humans. J Neural Eng. 2019 Aug 16;16(5):056015 Authors: Provenza NR, Paulk AC, Peled N, Restrepo MI, Cash SS, Dougherty DD, Eskandar EN, Borton DA, Widge AS Abstract OBJECTIVE: Here, our objective was to develop a binary decoder to detect task engagement in humans during two distinct, conflict-based behavioral tasks. Effortful, goal-directed decision-making requires the coordinated...

New, easier, effective, and stable splinting technique for maxillofacial osteotomy
Traditionally, surgical splints have been used to reposition the jaw.1 Poor stability and adaptation of the splint for various reasons has meant that proper intraoperative positioning has been a challenge to even the most experienced maxillofacial surgeon. Most orthognathic procedures involving the maxilla and mandible require occlusal splints to facilitate efficiency, accuracy, and stability of the jaws.2 The complications of improper fixation have far-reaching and deleterious effects on the temporomandibular...

Flattening of the orbital lower eyelid fat as a long-term outcome after surgical treatment of orbital floor fractures
Our aim was to report the incidence of asymmetry of the lower eyelid (that manifests itself as flattening of the eyelid fat) as a long-term complication of the surgical approach of unilateral fractures of the orbital floor. We retrospectively reviewed the aesthetic appearance of the lower eyelid in 43 patients after repair of such fractures. Long-term asymmetry seen as asymmetrical flattening of the eyelid fat was evaluated and graded qualitatively as mild, moderate, and severe. We studied its relations...

Assessment of the impact of sex in intensity, skin flares and central processing of histaminergic itch – a pilot study
Abstract Itch is the commonest skin‐related symptom and sex differences are increasingly recognised as important determinants in stratified medicine, but only little is known about sex differences in itch. Questionnaire‐based studies indicated that women perceive itch as more intensive and bothersome in comparison to men. However, data of studies using standardised itch models to objectify sex differences are scarce and inconsistent. To determine sex differences in intensity, skin flares and central...

Response to letter regarding “An integrated physico-chemical approach for explaining the differential impact of FLASH versus conventional dose rate irradiation on cancer and normal tissue responses”
We are gratified that our mechanism-oriented proposal on how FLASH ultra-high dose rate ionizing radiation (FLASH-RT; >40 Gy/s) may protect against normal tissue damage while preserving tumor responses is sparking discussion in the research community [1]. The current use of fractionated ionizing radiation to treat cancer with relatively low-dose rates is designed to provide a differential toxicity between normal and cancer tissue based on approaches that maximize the presence of oxygen and reoxygenation...

Knockdown of long noncoding RNA WNT5A-AS restores the fate of neural stem cells exposed to sevoflurane via inhibiting WNT5A/Ryk-ROS signaling
Publication date: October 2019Source: Biomedicine & Pharmacotherapy, Volume 118Author(s): Guolin Lu, Wei Zhao, Dongdong Rao, Sujing Zhang, Min Zhou, Shiyuan XuAbstractLong noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have been implicated in neurogenesis. LncRNA WNT5A-AS is upregulated in neural stem cells (NSCs), the proliferation of which is inhibited by sevoflurane. Thus, we hypothesized that knocking down of lncRNA WNT5A-AS may restore the fate of NSCs exposed to sevoflurane. To test this hypothesis, NSCs obtained...
