Increased expression of nucleophosmin is associated with the pathophysiology of chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis
Nucleophosmin (NPM1) has been suggested to be involved in the pathophysiologic mechanism of inflammatory disorders. We measured the expression level of NPM1 in nasal polyp (NP) tissues of patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP). We also assessed the correlation between NPM1 expression and other parameters such as eosinophilic infiltration, inflammatory cytokines, and clinical indicators such as Lund-Mackay computed tomography (CT) score. Imaging plays an important preoperative role, as it is the only way to decide whether a cochlear implant is possible or not. The preoperative evaluation of the temporal bone for the precise selection of the candidates for cochlear implant is including CT (Computed Tomography) and MRI (Magnetic...

Modified wafer for orthognathic surgery in partially edentulous patients
We present a modified wafer for mandibular orthognathic surgery in a partially edentulous 49-year-old woman. To the best of our knowledge, this technique has not been reported previously, and it was effective with an operating time that was comparable to similar operations in dentate patients. Palmatine alleviates hyperalgesia by inhibiting the expression of calcitonin gene-related peptide in the trigeminal ganglion of rats with chronic constriction injury of the infraorbital nerve
Trigeminal neuralgia is one of the most common of the neuropathic pains, and it can seriously influence patients ’ quality of life. Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is a type of nociceptive neurotransmitter that is expressed in neurons of the trigeminal ganglion and plays a major part in transmitting pain. The rat model of trigeminal neuralgia was established by causing a chronic constriction injury of the infraorbital nerve (CCI-ION). Male Sprague-Dawley rats (n=24) were randomly divided into...

Fungal Necrotizing Fasciitis of Craniofacial Region: A Diagnostic Challenge
AbstractNecrotizing fasciitis is a rare rapidly progressive, devastating surgical emergency that results in necrosis of superficial fascia, and subcutaneous tissue. It most commonly affects the abdominal wall, extremities and perineum, while the involvement in the head and neck region is relatively rare. Here, we report a successfully treated case of necrotizing fasciitis of the craniofacial region caused by Mucor in an uncontrolled diabetic patient. Early diagnosis, early surgical intervention with...

Modelling physical limits of migration by a kinetic model with non-local sensing
Abstract Migrating cells choose their preferential direction of motion in response to different signals and stimuli sensed by spanning their external environment. However, the presence of dense fibrous regions, lack of proper substrate, and cell overcrowding may hamper cells from moving in certain directions or even from sensing beyond regions that practically act like physical barriers. We extend the non-local kinetic model proposed by Loy and Preziosi (J Math Biol, 80, 373–421,...

On some stochastic properties of lives lived and left in non-stationary populations
Abstract First, we revisit the “life lived equals life left” property for stationary populations and discuss it from a more general perspective. Specifically, we show that identically distributed random age and the remaining lifetime in stationary populations have the same distribution as the equilibrium distribution of the renewal theory. Then we consider specific non-stationary populations that are closed to migration and have a constant birth rate. We obtain some useful inequalities...
