Elderly nursing homes residents—are they a priority in national COVID-19 strategies?
My mother-in-law, a nursing home resident, died this week. She had chronic ill-health and had become weaker in the last few months. She suffered from recurrent urinary tract infections and a week before her passing away had become symptomatic and weaker. A doctor, from afar, diagnosed her as possible COVID-19 infection. And so her nightmare began.

Neuroendocrine carcinoma of the ampulla of Vater: a case report, review and recommendations
AbstractNeuroendocrine tumor (NET) of the ampulla of Vater is a rare presentation of biliary obstruction. Here, we present a case of NET and discuss the current recommendations that necessitate different management and surgical treatment than other sites. A 56-year-old Caucasian female presented with 2 years of right upper quadrant pain. Workup revealed a well-differentiated 2.2 cm NET at the ampulla with 0 MF/10 HPF, Stage 1A T2NOMO. Whipple procedure performed with 2.2 cm ampullary NET with 1 of...

Randomized trial of a hospice video educational tool for patients with advanced cancer and their caregivers
Background Patients with advanced cancer and their caregivers have substantial misperceptions regarding hospice, which contributes to its underuse. Methods The authors conducted a single‐site randomized trial of a video educational tool versus a verbal description of hospice in 150 hospitalized patients with advanced cancer and their caregivers. Patients without a caregiver were eligible. Intervention participants (75 patients and 18 caregivers) viewed a 6‐minute video depicting hospice. Control...

MEK or ERK inhibition effectively abrogates emergence of acquired osimertinib resistance in the treatment of epidermal growth factor receptor–mutant lung cancers
Background The majority of patients with non–small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) harboring activating epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) mutations respond well to osimertinib (AZD9291), a third‐generation, mutation‐selective EGFR inhibitor. The current study focuses on determining whether targeting MEK/ERK signaling prevents or delays the development of acquired resistance to osimertinib. Methods Drug effects on cell survival were determined by measuring cell number alterations. Apoptosis...

NPC‐0501 trial on the value of changing chemoradiotherapy sequence, replacing 5‐fluorouracil with capecitabine, and altering fractionation for patients with advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma
Background A current recommendation for the treatment of patients with locoregionally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is conventional fractionated radiotherapy (RT) with concurrent cisplatin followed by adjuvant cisplatin and 5‐fluorouracil (PF). This randomized NPC‐0501 trial evaluated the therapeutic effect of changing to an induction‐concurrent sequence or accelerated‐fractionation sequence, and/or replacing 5‐fluorouracil with capecitabine (X). Methods Patients with American Joint...

Financial conflicts of interest among National Comprehensive Cancer Network clinical practice guideline panelists in 2019
Background Clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) are evidence‐based guidelines that serve as a standard of care in oncology practice, reimbursements, and quality improvement initiatives. To our knowledge, the extent of financial conflicts of interest (FCOIs) in National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) guidelines have not been systemically evaluated. The current study evaluated the extent of FCOIs in the NCCN CPGs for the most common malignancies in the United States. Methods The authors...

Obesity, race, and long‐term prostate cancer outcomes
Background The authors previously found that obesity was linked with prostate cancer (PC)–specific mortality (PCSM) among men who underwent radical prostatectomy (RP). Herein, in a larger RP cohort, the authors investigated whether the association between obesity and long‐term PC outcomes, including PCSM, differed by race. Methods Data from 5929 patients who underwent RP and were in the Shared Equal Access Regional Cancer Hospital (SEARCH) database were analyzed. Prior to RP, body mass index...

Development of a novel in vitro insulin resistance model in primary human tenocytes for diabetic tendinopathy research
Background Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) had been reported to be associated with tendinopathy. However, the underlying mechanisms of diabetic tendinopathy still remain largely to be discovered. The purpose of this study was to develop insulin resistance (IR) model on primary human tenocytes (hTeno) culture with tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) treatment to study tenocytes homeostasis as an implication for diabetic tendinopathy. ...

A systematic review of the direct and indirect effects of herbivory on plant reproduction mediated by pollination
Background Plant reproduction is influenced by the net outcome of plant–herbivore and plant–pollinator interactions. While both herbivore impacts and pollinator impacts on plant reproduction have been widely studied, few studies examine them in concert. Methodology Here, we review the contemporary literature that examines the net outcomes of herbivory and pollination on plant reproduction and the impacts of herbivores on pollination through damage to shared host plants using systematic...

Age-dependent differences in iris colouration of passerines during autumn migration in Central Europe
Avian eye colour changes with age, but many aspects of this transition are still insufficiently understood. We examined if an individual’s sex, age, species and body condition are related to the iris colour in common migratory passerines during their autumn passage through Central Europe. A total of 1,399 individuals from nine numerous species were ringed and examined in late autumn in northern Poland. Each individual was sexed by plumage (if possible) and assigned to one of three classes of the...
