Evaluation of an alternative method for production of biodiesel from processed fats derived from Category 1, 2 and 3 animal by‐products (submitted by College Proteins)
Abstract An alternative method for the production of biodiesel from processed fats derived from Category 1, 2 and 3 animal by‐products was assessed. The method is based on a pre‐cleaning process, acidic esterification/transesterification of tallow using 1.5% methanesulfonic acid w/w; 140°C; 5.5 bar absolute pressure (bara); 4 h, followed by fractional distillation. The application focuses on the capacity of the alternative method to inactivate prions. Given the limitations that biodiesel presents...

The public health risk posed by Listeria monocytogenes in frozen fruit and vegetables including herbs, blanched during processing
Abstract A multi‐country outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes ST6 linked to blanched frozen vegetables (bfV) took place in the EU (2015–2018). Evidence of food‐borne outbreaks shows that L. monocytogenes is the most relevant pathogen associated with bfV. The probability of illness per serving of uncooked bfV, for the elderly (65–74 years old) population, is up to 3,600 times greater than cooked bfV and very likely lower than any of the evaluated ready‐to‐eat food categories. The main factors affecting...

A machine learning model for predicting risk of hospital readmission within 30 days of discharge: validated with LACE index and patient at risk of hospital readmission (PARR) model
Abstract The objective of this study was to design and develop a predictive model for 30-day risk of hospital readmission using machine learning techniques. The proposed predictive model was then validated with the two most commonly used risk of readmission models: LACE index and patient at risk of hospital readmission (PARR). The study cohort consisted of 180,118 admissions with 22,565 (12.5%) of actual readmissions within 30 days of hospital discharge, from 01 Jan 2015 to 31...

Managing Excessive Gingival Display Using a Digital Workflow
Abstract This technique article describes an approach to managing excessive gingival display by lengthening of the clinical crowns using a digital workflow. An intraoral scanner was used to obtain a template to be used for the crown lengthening surgical procedure considering the patient‐desired diagnostic setups while fully seating the template on the patient's teeth during surgery. Using a digital approach for lengthening the clinical crowns decreased the likelihood of the need for post‐surgical...

Clitoral length in immature and mature captive tufted capuchin (Sapajus spp.) females: A cross‐sectional study
In Sapajus it may be difficult to sex infants at a distance due to the external genitals which in immatures may represent a source of confusion. The human perception of a longer external clitoris in immature than mature females may only in part be explained by different body proportions, since our results suggests that length of the external clitoris is actually larger in infants (I) and juveniles (J) than in adults (A). Longer external clitoris in immature compared to mature females may tentatively...

Pruritic and Antipruritic Colours: An Exploratory Pilot Study
Abstract Itch is the commonest skin‐related symptom and can be influenced by visual cues as exemplified by the phenomenon of “contagious itch”. Colours are visual cues able to modify somatosensory inputs. We explored the relationship of colours and itch and the impact of colour viewing on itch intensity. In this cross‐sectional study, patients suffering from itch with a mean intensity of ≥2 on a Numerical Rating Scale during the last 7 days were evaluated. The study consisted of a questionnaire‐based...

Peeling with 70% glicolic acid followed by 5% 5‐fluorouracil as well as 5% 5‐fluorouracil cream are effective methods for the treatment of actinic keratoses on upper limbs: a randomized clinical trial
Abstract The 5% 5‐fluorouracil (5‐FU) cream, considered the gold standard topical treatment, and peeling using 70% glycolic acid (GA) followed by 5% 5‐FU are methods for the treatment of actinic keratoses (AKs). However, the comparison of these two treatments had not yet been described and therefore was the objective of this study. A randomized clinical trial, intrapatient study in which 17 patients received a type of treatment in the right and left upper limb with 5% 5‐FU cream (twice daily) or...

Neutrophil /platelet to lymphocyte ratio in monitoring of response to TNF‐α inhibitors in psoriatic patients
Abstract Neutrophil or platelet to lymphocyte ratio (NLR and PLR) has been proposed to be used as prognostic purposes in a variety of diseases. The study aim was to evaluate the usefulness of these ratios in monitoring of response to TNF‐α‐inhibitors in psoriatic patients. Eighty psoriatic patients were included and treated with TNF‐α‐inhibitors for 12 months based on drug protocol. Hematologic indices, including NLR and PLR values were assessed before and after treatment. Data on psoriasis area...

A new medical imaging technique for diagnosing dermatologic diseases; a clue to treatment choices.
Abstract Recently, it has been shown that DNA could emit some waves which carry main information about its evolution. Using this idea, we design a new method to image the behavior of skin cells, especially melanocytes, and diagnose their damage. In this method, we make use of a circuit which is formed from DNAs within the damaged melanocytes, a graphene sheet, DNAs within the healthy cells, and a scope. To amplify exchanged waves between hexagonal and pentagonal manifolds of DNAs, we induce some...
