Interpreting clinical significance of machine learning approaches and radiomics in radiation oncology trials
We applaud the effort by Yang et al in attempting to harness machine learning approach to predict lymph node (LN) metastasis in gastric cancer [1]. As the number of research using machine learning solutions to oncological problems increases, clinicians need to be able to appraise such research with systematic methodology to interpret clinical significance and meaningful applications[2]. Radiomics is a relatively new field that warrant oncologists’ attention and we would like to seek clarification...

The knowledge and practice of pediatricians in children’s oral health: a scoping review
Abstract Background Dental caries is a significant public health problem and one of the most common chronic conditions affecting children. The potential for the non-dental workforce to improve children’s oral health is well documented. For well over a decade, there have been calls for pediatricians to address children’s oral health, but the incorporation of oral health screening, referral, and oral healthcare in pediatric practice...

Predictors of healing, ulcer recurrence and persistence, amputation and mortality in type 2 diabetic patients with diabetic foot: a 10-year retrospective cohort study
Abstract Purpose Predictors of outcome of diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) are important to improve the management of patients. Aim of the study was to find these predictors in type 2 diabetic patients with DFU. Methods We recruited 583 patients. They were followed-up by a multidisciplinary team. A holistic and conservative approach was used and all risk...

Circulating vitamin D and the risk of gestational diabetes: a systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis
Abstract Purpose Several meta-analyses of observational studies revealed a modest increase in the risk of gestational diabetes (GDM) among pregnant women with low levels of serum vitamin D. However, no study examined a dose-response meta-analysis as well as a high versus low analysis in this regard. Methods We systematically searched PubMed, Embase,...

Habitat determinants of golden‐headed lion tamarin (Leontopithecus chrysomelas) occupancy of cacao agroforests: Gloomy conservation prospects for management intensification
Determining factors for the golden‐headed lion tamarin occupancy of cocoa agroforests, and potential consequences of the management intensification on the populations. Abstract Organismal distributions in human‐modified landscapes largely depend on the capacity of any given species to adapt to changes in habitat structure and quality. The golden‐headed lion tamarin (GHLT; Leontopithecus chrysomelas ) is an Endangered primate from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest whose remaining populations occupy...

Monitoring muscle over three orders of magnitude: Widespread positive allometry among locomotor and body support musculature in the pectoral girdle of varanid lizards (Varanidae)
Abstract There is a functional trade‐off in the design of skeletal muscle. Muscle strength depends on the number of muscle fibers in parallel, while shortening velocity and operational distance depend on fascicle length, leading to a trade‐off between the maximum force a muscle can produce and its ability to change length and contract rapidly. This trade‐off becomes even more pronounced as animals increase in size because muscle strength scales with area (length2) while body mass scales with volume...

Pentadactyl manus of the Metoposaurus krasiejowensis from the Late Triassic of Poland, the first record of pentadactyly among Temnospondyli
Metoposaurus krasiejowensis from the Late Triassic of Poland shows a unique for Temnospondyli structure of the manus with five digits. Based on the distribution of pentadactyly vs. tetradactyly in the temnospondyl manus, the number of digits was not phylogenetically constrained in temnospondyls, similar to today's amphibians. Abstract Temnospondyli are commonly believed to have possessed four digits in the manus and five in the pes. However, actual finds of articulated autopodia are extremely...

Three‐dimensional structure of seminiferous tubules in the Syrian hamster
The present study revealed the 3D structure of seminiferous tubules in developing and adult Syrian hamsters, which is different from that in mice and rats. Abstract The hamster is useful for the study of male reproductive biology. However, unlike in the mouse and rat, the gross structure of seminiferous tubules in the hamster is largely unknown. The aim of the present study was to clarify the precise 3‐dimensional (3D) structure of seminiferous tubules in hamsters. We reconstructed all seminiferous...

Producing 3D printed high‐fidelity retroperitoneal models from in vivo patient data: The Oxford Method
We outline the steps required to produce a high fidelity anatomical model from in vivo patient data, followed by a discussion of the advantages and disadvantages relative to current available options. Abstract Macroscopic anatomy has traditionally been taught using cadaveric material, lectures and a variable amount of additional resources such as online modules. Anatomical models have also been used to assist in teaching. Of these, traditional plastic models have been shown to be effective...

This study describes observations of histological sections from serial sagittal sections of 25 embryos and fetuses at 6–7 weeks of gestation and demonstrating how left/right differences in a configuration of the pulmonary artery and its branches establishes. Abstract Although left/right differences in a configuration of the pulmonary artery (PA) and its branches are well known, there is little information as to when and how such differences are established. Journal of International Medical Research, Volume 48, Issue 7, July 2020. ObjectivesThe relationship between lipid levels and arterial stiffness remains controversial. Therefore, we aimed to determine the relationship between lipid profiles and brachial–ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) as an indicator of arterial stiffness.MethodsA total of 909 participants aged 24 to 84 years were stratified into four baPWV quartiles in our study. Serum lipids, baPWV, and other variables of the participants were...

Appearance of cerebellar cyst following microvascular decompression to treat hemifacial spasm: a report of two cases and literature review
Journal of International Medical Research, Volume 48, Issue 7, July 2020. Microvascular decompression (MVD) is an effective and safe approach for treating hemifacial spasm (HFS). Postoperative complications may include facial nerve palsy, hearing loss, intracerebral haematoma, and brainstem infarction. The occurrence of intracranial cyst following MVD is extremely rare, with few cases documented in the literature. A statistical shape modeling approach for predicting subject-specific human skull from head surface
Abstract Human skull is an important body structure for jaw movement and facial mimic simulations. Surface head can be reconstructed using 3D scanners in a straightforward way. However, internal skull is challenging to be generated when only external information is available. Very few studies in the literature focused on the skull generation from outside head information, especially in a subject-specific manner with a complete skull. Consequently, this present study proposes a...
