Tailgut cyst: from differential diagnosis to surgical resection—case report and literature review
AbstractTailgut cyst is a rare tumor originating from the embryonic remnant located in the retrorectal space. The diagnosis is usually incidental duse to the absence of symptoms. When present, they are nonspecific, such as abdominal pain, dysuria and tenesmus. Imaging tests are a great help in the diagnosis and surgical planning. The standard treatment is resection, which the surgeon must perform to avoid future complications, such as malignancy. We present a case of tailgut cyst in a young patient...

Operative consideration in patient with cryoglobulinaemia undergoing cardiac surgery with use of cardiopulmonary bypass
AbstractCryoglobulinaemia can be defined as the presence of single or mixed immunoglobulins in the serum, which precipitate at sub-homeostatic temperatures and redissolve at higher temperatures. This condition in the context of cardiac surgery can precipitate systemic complications secondary to cold agglutination and lead to significant perioperative problems with the cardiopulmonary bypass machine and the extracorporeal circuit. We present a case of a 74-year-old gentleman with cryoglobulinaemia...

Gastric heterotopia with perforation mimicking neoplastic process in ileum
AbstractGastric heterotopia (GH) is rare in ileum except in Meckel’s diverticulum and rarely causes severe symptoms in adults. Here, we report a 31-year-old male patient with GH in ileum presented with bowel perforation and mass formation in the mesentery mimicking perforated small bowel tumor. Microscopic examination of the lesion showed completely differentiated gastric body-type mucosa with mucosal ulceration, fistula formation and bowel perforation. This case raises the awareness that GH may...

Diagnosis of primary osteosarcoma of the urinary bladder in a resource-limited setting: a case report and review of the literature
AbstractExtraskeletal osteosarcoma is a rare malignant mesenchymal soft tissue tumor without attachment to the bone and is able to produce osteoid or cartilaginous matrix. Rendering a definitive diagnosis may pose a challenge particularly in a resource-limited setting. We report a case of primary osteosarcoma of the urinary bladder presenting with hematuria, dysuria and positive history of schistosomal contact. Computed tomography intravenous urogram revealed a large heterogeneous mass at the right...

Two bladders, two colons and two uteruses
AbstractComplete colonic duplication is rare and frequently asymptomatic. We present an interesting case of tubular colonic duplication with associated uterine didelphys and a longitudinal sagittal septum in the bladder, noted incidentally on cross-sectional imaging. The patient was later diagnosed with ulcerative colitis affecting the duplicated colon and is currently in remission following medical therapy.

Mucinous cystic neoplasm of the liver: a case report
AbstractA 50-year-old woman was investigated for epigastric pain. Imaging revealed a multilocular cyst with multiple thin septae within segment IV of the liver, measuring up to 140 mm in diameter. There was associated bile duct dilatation. Given the patient’s symptoms, the size of the cyst and malignant potential, a hemi-hepatectomy was performed. Histopathology demonstrated a cyst lined by columnar mucinous epithelium with underlying ovarian-type stroma. Therefore, the diagnosis was mucinous cystic...

Thoracic aortic aneurysm causing aorto-esophageal fistula—our experience with a rare disease
AbstractAorto-esophageal fistula is a life-threatening condition, accounting for a small number of cases of upper gastrointestinal bleeding where patients present with one or more features of Chiari’s triad. We present the case of a 43-year-old woman, referred to us with symptoms of central chest pain, sudden onset dysphagia followed by massive hemoptysis. She was diagnosed with an aorto-esophageal fistula due to a ruptured thoracic aortic aneurysm and rushed for an emergency endovascular thoracic...

Resection of a colonic mass following trauma: a diagnostic dilemma
AbstractA 53-year-old Caucasian male presented with a 2-week history of abdominal distension, pain, nausea and lethargy. His symptoms began 1 day after an all-terrain vehicle accident during which he suffered blunt-force trauma to his mid-right abdomen. CT scan demonstrated abnormal thickening of the ascending colon and terminal ilium with surrounding inflammation within the retroperitoneum and colonic mesentery. Given his likely mechanism and symptomatic improvement, he was initially managed conservatively....

Indeterminate dendritic cell tumor in the pancreas
AbstractIndeterminate dendritic cell tumor (IDCT) is an extremely rare hematologic neoplastic disorder with proliferation of indeterminate dendritic cells. In the vast majority of cases, IDCTs are restricted to the skin or lymph nodes. To our knowledge, we report the first case of IDCT in the pancreas. Due to the rarity of extracutaneous IDCT, guidelines or treatment recommendations addressing their management are missing. We performed a review of literature to compare our experience to the management...

Esophageal stent migration to the transverse colon, entrapped within a hiatal hernia status post esophagectomy
AbstractSelf-expandable metal stents are used in both benign and malignant esophageal conditions for the treatment of strictures, leaks and perforations. With this intervention, the most common complication is stent migration. Those in whom migration occurs are subject to additional procedures with significant risk. We present a unique case of stent migration in a 61-year-old male who underwent transhiatal esophagectomy secondary to esophageal adenocarcinoma. Postoperatively, two covered stents were...

Loss of libido in a man with an incidental Leydig cell tumour of the testis: a rare tumour discovered following an isolated common complaint
AbstractLeydig cell tumours (LCTs) are rare testicular stromal neoplasms classically presenting with a painless testicular mass or swelling in adults. Symptoms secondary to hypogonadism may occur resulting from the hormonal activity of these tumours. Loss of libido is described in LCTs in conjunction with other symptoms; however, no case has reported this as the sole presenting feature. We describe the case of a 42-year-old man presenting to his General Practitioner with loss of libido and no other...

Spontaneous jejunoileal perforation as a manifestation of celiac disease—a rare entity: a case report
AbstractCeliac disease or gluten-sensitive enteropathy is characterized by an autoimmune response in the small intestine triggered by the ingestion of gluten in the diet. It has a prevalence of 0.62% worldwide with considerable variation in incidence among countries. The clinical manifestations of celiac disease differ according to type: the classical type presents with intestinal symptoms, the non-classical type with intestinal or extraintestinal symptoms and the silent type is asymptomatic. Human...

Diagnosing gastric volvulus in chest X-ray: report of three cases
AbstractGastric volvulus is a rare abnormal rotation of the stomach along its axis. It is a surgical emergency, hence requires prompt diagnosis and treatment to prevent life-threatening gangrenous changes. Hence, a high index of suspicion is required in any patients presenting with an acute abdomen in emergency. The entity can present acutely with pain abdomen and vomiting, or as chronic with non-specific symptoms. Chest X-ray findings to diagnose it may be overlooked in patients with acute abdomen....

A gastric duplication cyst incidentally discovered during an obesity surgery for a 55-year-old female: a rare case report from Syria
AbstractA gastric duplication cyst (GDC) is an uncommon gastrointestinal (GI) tract anomaly in adults. Nonspecific symptoms make it difficult to diagnose, while radiological examination might be helpful. However, the final diagnosis is made after eradication and histopathological study. Herein we report a case of an asymptomatic, incidentally diagnosed gastric duplication cyst discovered during laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy in a 55-year-old female.

Type B aortic dissection repair using a Thoraflex hybrid prosthesis in a setting of aberrant left vertebral artery
AbstractType B aortic dissection (TBAD) is often managed conservatively with intervention reserved for complicated cases. Strategies for complicated and uncomplicated TBAD can involve optimal medical therapy, thoracic endovascular aortic replacement and open surgical repair of TBAD with replacement of the affected segment of aorta and reimplantation of aortic branches. The frozen elephant trunk technique has been reported to be a successful surgical strategy in patients with complicated TBAD, particularly...
