Predictors for failure of supraglottic superimposed high‐frequency jet ventilation during upper airway surgery in adult patients; a retrospective cohort study of 224 cases
Abstract Supraglottic Superimposed High Frequency Jet Ventilation (SSHFJV) maximizes surgical field during endoscopic upper airway surgery. In our retrospective series of 224 cases, there was a low incidence (12%) of failure with the use of SSHFJV in upper airway surgery. Positive history of pulmonary pathology (OR=4.91) and high BMI (OR=1.15) were found to be significant independent factors for failure of SSHFJV in adult patients undergoing upper airway surgery. Converting ventilation techniques...

Estimating Vocal Fold Stiffness: Using the Relationship between Subglottic Pressure and Fundamental Frequency of Phonation as an Analog
Abstract Objective The stiffness of the vocal folds is an important factor in voice production, yet clinically applicable measurements are still lacking. It has been demonstrated in an in vivo canine model that fundamental frequency (F0) increased linearly as subglottic pressure (Ps) increased, but with a lesser slope for higher levels of vocal fold tension. In this study, the relationship between F0 and Ps was investigated using the airflow interruption method in awake patients noninvasively....

Ways to volunteer at an animal shelter, the importance of play for cats, some beautiful budgies, and more…By Zazie Todd, PhDMy favourites this month“Studying great ape gestures has the potential to provide insight into the evolution of human language, but it is also fascinating in its own right, figuring out how another species communicates and what is meaningful to them.“ Reading the signs by Kirsty E Graham.“A successful volunteer is someone who loves animals and appreciates the fact that no matter...

Pediatric ossiculoplasty: optimizing outcomes
Purpose of review Despite years of research, pediatric ossiculoplasty remains a challenging surgery with numerous variables factoring into successful outcomes. The aim of this review is to summarize recent publications on surgical technique, timing, and reconstruction materials. Recent findings The cause behind ossicular discontinuity does not seem to play a role in hearing results after ossiculoplasty; however, revision surgery is associated with worsening outcomes. The status of the ossicles...

Dysphagia lusoria: problem or incidentaloma?
Purpose of review To address the incidental versus pathogenic nature of dysphagia lusoria and to provide a review of the cause, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of this condition with respect to recent literature. Recent findings Case reports comprise the majority of recent literature concerning dysphagia lusoria. Many patients with an aberrant right subclavian artery (ARSA) have additional coexisting vascular anomalies. While most individuals present around age 50, some present...
