USDA conducts on-site food safety audit for Germany’s processed meat exports
A new USDA audit of Germany’s food safety systems for processed meat products exported to the United States did not find much to cause concern.  The on-site verification audit of Germany’s inspection system occurred from March 18 through March 29, ending with an exit interview in Berlin. At that interview, Germany’s Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety promised to take corrective actions to address USDA findings. USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is to monitor the...

Researchers find out how E. coli, other bacteria obtain iron
Researchers have discovered how bacteria such as E. coli get the essential nutrient iron during infection. Scientists from Monash University in Australia found pathogenic bacteria obtain iron by pirating it from host proteins. The protein import system of E. coli is an important factor in infections caused by pathogenic strains of this bacteria. Understanding how it functions will allow researchers to target and block it to combat such infections. To grow and cause infection bacteria must get...

The time course and mechanisms of change in biomarkers of joint metabolism in response to acute exercise and chronic training in physiologic and pathological conditions
Abstract Purpose The benefits of exercise across the lifespan and for a wide spectrum of health and diseases are well known. However, there remains less clarity as to the effects of both acute and chronic exercise on joint health. Serum biomarkers of joint metabolism are sensitive to change and have the potential to differentiate between normal and adverse adaptations to acute and chronic load. Therefore, the primary objective of this...

PRO/PL> Tobacco ringspot virus, soybean - USA: (IN)
Other Plant Disease -- United States[A] rare soybean disease, tobacco ringspot virus [TRSV], has appeared in Indiana. The disease is hard to miss in a field. Infected plants have few pods. They stay green longer because there are virtually no beans for the plant to feed sugars to, so sugars remain in stems. A few pods may have one or more beans in them. They seldom mature, however.Darcy Telenko, Purdue University, indicated that she hasn't seen the disease very often. TRSV can be transmitted through...

The risk of cardiovascular disease in prostate cancer patients receiving androgen deprivation therapies.
Background: Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT), with a proven role in prostate cancer management, has been associated with various cardiovascular diseases. However, few studies have investigated these associations by type of ADT, particularly for newer ADTs such as the gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) antagonist degarelix. We investigated the risk of cardiovascular disease by type of ADT in a real-world setting. Methods: We identified men newly diagnosed with prostate cancer, from 2009...

What Is the Causal Interpretation of Sibling Comparison Designs?
Sibling comparison designs have long been used to assess causal effects of exposures for which randomized studies are impossible and measurement of all relevant confounding is unobtainable. The idea is to utilize the fact that siblings often share a lot of unobserved variables. Therefore, it is proposed that in certain cases, comparing siblings is equivalent to comparing exchangeable individuals, which is the foundation for causal inference based on randomized controlled trials (RCTs). However, this...

Harnessing Tweets for Early Detection of an Acute Disease Event
Background: Melbourne, Australia, witnessed a thunderstorm asthma outbreak on 21st November 2016, resulting in over 8,000 hospital admissions by 6pm. This is a typical acute disease event. Because the time to respond is short for acute disease events, an algorithm based on time between events has shown promise. Shorter the time between consecutive incidents of the disease, more likely the outbreak. Social media posts such as tweets can be used as input to the monitoring algorithm. However, due...

Painless destructive thyroiditis in a patient with resistance to thyroid hormone: a case report
Abstract Background Resistance to thyroid hormone (RTH) usually features a syndrome of inappropriate secretion of thyroid-stimulating hormone (SITSH) without suppression of the typical high thyroid hormone levels. However, some patients with RTH show thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) suppression due to thyrotoxicosis. We report a case of painless thyroiditis in a patient with RTH that was misdiagnosed as Graves’ disease because of...
